BUDAPEST, July 24, (Xinhua) -- German carmaker Audi launched the serial production of electric engines at its construction plant in Gyor (NW Hungary) on Tuesday, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
"The electric motors are being turned out on a modular assembly line in an 8,800 sqm production area," Audi AG declared in a statement.
Currently, about 80 people are working on production of the electric engines, motors, but the headcount will rise to more than 180 by the end of the year, according to Audi.
Production capacity will be about 80 electric axle motors a day at the start, but will gradually increase as a single shift work scheme changes to three shifts.
The first electric motors will go into the Audi e-tron, Audi's first all-electric model to be built at the company's plant in Brussels.
At the launching ceremony, Audi AG board member for production and logistics Peter Kossler said "The vehicle plant in Gyor, which to date has produced over 33 million engines and more than 1.1 million cars over the past quarter of a century, is exemplary for the Audi Group".
According to Kossler, by 2025 electrically driven versions of all basic models manufactured by Audi will be available.
